Help extend the Hazan-Cohen Family Tree Ayuda amplía el Árbol Genealógico Hazan-Cohen

Our ancestors left clues in our DNA that can determine our ancestral origins. By comparing our results to these databases they could tell us if those clues indicate if we are related to someone in their database. Their Jewish specific comparative databases are the largest in the world containing records for Jews of Ashkenazi and Sephardic origins, as well as Levite and Cohanim.

The Cohanim markers are is 16-23-10-11-12-14.  A kohen (or cohen, Hebrew כּהן, "priest", pl. כּהנִים, kohanim or cohanim), is assumed to be a direct male descendant of the Biblical Aaron, brother of Moses. Another term for the descendants of Aaron are the Aaronites. Haplogroup J1 and J2 is also where they find the Cohanim gene.

Y-DNA: $149. By testing the Y-DNA, males can determine the origin of their paternal line. The Y-DNA checks the paternal line, with no influence of any females along that line. Females do not receive the Y-DNA. If you are a female and would like to know about your paternal line, you need to have a brother or a male relative from that line to be tested.

mtDNA: 129. By testing the mtDNA, males and females can determine the origin of their maternal line. Once your results are in, you will be compared to the data from the landmark study from Dr. Doron Behar, our Chief mtDNA Scientist. The mtDNA checks the maternal line, with no influence of any males along that line. Both males and females receive the mtDNA from the mother.

Steps in contributing your DNA

1. Go to the "Group Discount" link for Sephardic Project or email the adminstrator, Alain Farhi, for more information at alain@farhi.org;

2. Order 12 marker yDNA (father's lineage) for $99 or mtDNA (mother's lineage) for $129. Do both tests for $199. (savings of $78 from the non-group price);

3. You should send Family Tree an email at juliew@familytreedna.com if you need the instructions in a different language than English or if you want to ship it to another country;

4. Return the kit as soon as possible and you'll be notifed by email as soon as the results are posted;

5. When the results are posted, you will be given a link to upload your results to a free database to compare with others;

6. You will also receive a list of names and emails for people you closely match.

7. If you chose to do the DNA tests for both lineages, usually you'll receive the mtDNA (mother's) FIRST then the yDNA (father's).

8. If you can't afford the Family Tree DNA Test, go to the FREE DNA Testing link to participate in the Sorensen World Genealogy Project. Read their FAQ's to be fully informed.

TIPS:

Sometimes, the tests have to be re-run. Don't worry if there is a delay.

Do your family tree as a GEDCOM file, the widely accepted software by Family Tree Maker for genealogy in databases around the world.

Upload your GEDCOM for the maternal side and paternal side on your Family Tree DNA page.

Once Family Tree DNA receives your kit, you can upgrade the testing at any time.

Suggestion from researcher, Bob Rubin, if you're shipping the test from a foreign country and have to delare the contents for customs, label the envelope as "cotton swabs"
